In February 2018, Afvalzorg participated in a 5-day training programme “Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) in Myanmar”. This capacity building programme was organised by the Netherlands Embassy and the Yangon City Development Committee.
As in many other developing countries and emerging economies, the waste sector in Myanmar faces a major challenge; providing waste management services to the public with limited budgets. Very often the priority is set on collection, leaving even less money available for landfilling. On top of that, available budgets are not always used in the most efficient way. As a result, major hazards and risks for people and the environment at and in close proximity of the landfills can occur.
The landfill management training in Yangon provided by Afvalzorg was attended by nearly 100 employees of waste organisations from various cities in Myanmar. The programme connected with daily practice in Myanmar as much as possible, and was received with great enthusiasm by the participants. Using clear practical examples, a starting point was created in setting priorities and sequencing improvements in landfill management.
