Afvalzorg and the Municipality of Lelystad have developed the educational board game Clean City, Tidy City! (Opgeruimd Stad Netjes!). On June 10, Alderman Sjaak Kruis of the Municipality of Lelystad and Afvalzorg Director Eveline Otten presented the first copy to Porteum school in Lelystad. Ideas from students at this school formed the foundation for the final game. The board game was developed for students in grades 7 and 8 (ages 10 to 12) and teaches them, in a fun and interactive way, about waste, reuse, and the circular economy.
Collaboration and Education
The collaboration between Afvalzorg and the municipality, arose from Afvalzorg’s social ambition to make a positive contribution to the communities surrounding its sites. Education plays an important role in this effort.
“As an environmental company, we believe it is important that young people understand what happens to our waste and the role they themselves can play in the process. We are pleased that we were able to incorporate ideas on both content and design from a project with students from the Technasium in Lelystad into an educational game,” said Eveline Otten, Afvalzorg’s CEO.
Widely Distributed
In June, the game will not only be distributed to all primary schools in Lelystad, but also to the children’s neighbourhood councils and the project Fun After School (Lol na school), a free program for children that broadens their horizons through active and challenging after-school activities.
Familiar Environment
Clean City, Tidy City! helps students discover what happens to waste and what they themselves can do to keep the city clean. The game takes place in locations around Lelystad and is designed to be played in small groups.
Afvalzorg believes in joining efforts with municipalities and local governments to create spaces where creativity and education promote and incentive environmental initiates.
