Afvalzorg is working together with the landfill operator in Bonaire to improve landfill management at the Lagun landfill site. Commissioned by the Openbaar Lichaam Bonaire (OLB, the Bonaire Authority), Afvalzorg provides technical expertise to help tackle key challenges including underground fires and long-term operational improvements.
Initial assessments revealed several smouldering underground fires that could pose a risk to public health and the environment. Afvalzorg is developing a plan to safely identify and extinguish these fires and improve daily landfill operations. This work is being carried out in close cooperation with OLB, Selibon, the fire brigade, public health services, and other local partners.
An information meeting held on 24 June was attended by nearby residents, local government representatives, Afvalzorg, and other stakeholders. The aim of the meeting was to present the long-term plan and answer any questions. Afvalzorg also provides specialist advice on sustainable, long-term landfill management across the island.
This partnership represents an important step towards safer waste management and commitment to the environment of Bonaire. Afvalzorg is proud to contribute to a sustainable future in this way.
