This month the 18th Sardinia Symposium on waste management and sustainable landfilling took place. For the first time, the symposium was delivered in a hybrid event format that allowed delegates from all over the world to participate, regardless of the travel restrictions due to COVID-19.

A total of 270 delegates from all over Europe were present in Sardinia, along with a few from other continents. Afvalzorg represented the Netherlands together with representatives from Delft University of Technology and Wageningen University & Research.

During the symposium we shared our experiences with landfill aeration and stabilisation from the pilots being carried out at two Afvalzorg sites at which the Dutch ‘sustainable landfill management’ project has been implemented. Our findings were very relevant to the international community and led to many positive discussions. We are highly committed to and motivated about finding new methods and techniques for ensuring that landfill sites pose no risks at all to people and the environment.
